Should Jackie Evancho compete and win as an amateur on America's Got Talent when she already has a CD?
When Jacob Evancho's audition video to America's Got Talent ('AGT') in 2009 did not get him on the show, the Evancho family submitted a tape for Jackie Evancho. A separate company screens and submits the entries to 'AGT', however I wonder if the YouTube acts were selected mid-season? If so, they're fortunate since they have unseen material and are more "rested". Jackie quickly won her rounds and became the highest ranked of the YouTube acts. She is definitely talented, young and naturally appealing - the qualities that any TV show would want (ratings bonanza!). Returning to point - my question is, should Jackie compete and win as an amateur on 'AGT' for a 1 million dollar prize and a Vegas show when she will, more than likely, make that on her own with either operatic success (preferred - she could become the next great opera star, alongside Renee Fleming or a coloratura such as Dame Joan Sutherland) or pop success (Divas Streisand, Andrews, or Dion)?

Hopefully after that (in her teens!), she can choose the path for her gift (opera or pop).

Starting own fishing show. Need advice on cameras!?
a buddy and I are looking to start are own show. I talked to a station and they told me how to submit a video for them to review and we will go from there. So i need some advice. We are both amateurs at capturing videos... also we are looking to get a high definition camera.
so.. 1 what are some decent cameras that wont burn a whole in my wallet?
2 what are some good ways to learn how to shoot videos? (this is a outdoors show fishing to be exact so the videos don't have to be award winning)
3 whats a good software for video editing?

My advice, you are going to be spending an arm and a leg for a HD camera that is also water-proof.

You have to take into account the location of the shooting, and your surroundings. The fishing shows that are aired nationally usually have thousands, THOUSANDS, of dollars sunk into them because they need waterproof equipment, a large enough boat to hold said equipment, and lots of man power.

Lets begin with the video equipment. The cheapest waterproof HD video camera I found was right around $300, and they were comparable to a Flip video camera. So, there is no such thing as an inexpensive HD waterproof camera... (And you NEED a waterproof camera. Accidents happen, man, then you'd be buying two cameras.)

Audio: Another thing you need to take into account is the wind. You are on an open lake, pond, ocean, and it can get pretty windy. An average camcorder cannot pick up voices over a windy *BRRROOOOWWWSSHHHOOOBBBRRRRR* You're going to have to get a soundboard, a microphone boom, lapel mics, and other audio equipment just to pick up speaking.

Lighting, since you want to shoot in hi-def, people tend to look kinda, whats the word, Shi*ty. No matter how gorgeous you are, or might be, hi-definition will no doubt, make you look 10 years older, 20 lbs heavier, and like you just woke up. one way people fix this is by lighting. You need lights to accompany your scenes, and this will cause problems due to the fact you are on a boat. If its a regular fishing boat it will be impossible, but if you were on, say, a yacht, I could see it happening. (Lighting isn't as important as the first two issues discussed.)

One last thing, manpower. You're going to need more than two people on that boat. One to run the sound equipment, one to run the camera, and one to run lighting (if used.) I know this sounds complicated, but it is true. Someone needs to man all stations at all times.

Final remark, power. To get all of this stuff is one thing, the final thing is electricity. Now please, do not run an extension cord through the water to your boat. If you do, you will not end up on your fishing show, but instead America's Funniest Home Videos. (Seriously) What you need to do is invest in some sort of portable power supply. If you buy a generator, (or already have one) make sure you use the audio advice, otherwise, you can't hear a thing over it. You could also buy a car battery and use power inverters if you want a cheap way to do things.

Now I know that all of this is overwhelming and sounds very expensive, and that's because it is. it is all VERY expensive and you are going to be paying out of pocket for all of this.

My recommendation: sponsors. Go to your local tackle/bait stores, tell them what you are planning, and ask them to sponsor you. Go to banks, stores, seafood restaurants, anything, and ask them to sponsor your show. That way you are not spending an arm and a leg out of pocket.

Now when it comes time to do this, remember a few things: 1. businesses want to know what you will do for them. Say you go to a bait shop and ask them to sponsor. Make sure you tell them that they will be mentioned, repeatedly, in your broadcast. If you go to a bank, make sure you tell them you will put a shout out to their branch/company in the show once, maybe twice every episode. If you cannot think of a name for your show, offer to call it the business's name, if they will solely sponsor the show (they pay for everything.)

2. Demographics. Remember who will be watching this. remember your demographic, which is just a fancy word for the age groups who will be attracted to this show. This also helps with advertising, because businesses are more likely to sponsor you if your demographic will be shopping their stores. You also want to appeal to these viewers the most, because then you will have faithful viewers.

3. Ratings. You need to know the ratings for the network that will be playing the show, and when. If you are talking to a NBC,CBS,ABC,FOX affiliate, then you need to make sure you tell this to the advertiser. On the other hand, if you are going to be airing through a local, non affiliated tv station, then you need to mention who watches it the most.

4. The network. If you are dealing with a network station, NBC,CBS,ABC, FOX, then you need to make sure everything is LEGAL. Get EVERYTHING in WRITING!!!

Getting everything in writing is imperative- with the network, the affiliate, the advertisers, the sponsors. If you don't, the network can drop you and use your idea, the advertisers can pull out and leave you hanging, and everything can fall though. It doesn't take much to screw the pooch in television.

If your friend seriously wants to gain celebrity based on pubic hair then she is going to have to go where people value that kind of thing. Perhaps in some sort of freak show. or...maybe she can contact a hair depilatory company and negotiate a deal as a spokesperson. (or better yet she could license a product herself and be the product model)
